Ethylene Carbonate

Spurred on by my attempts at the alkali metals by electrolysis I have made a few attempts at ethylene carbonate which is used as an electrolyte (admixed) with other non-aqueous electrolytes in lithium type batteries, this green solvent also finds use as a high temperature alkylating agent and in the production of other alkyl carbonates.

Catalytically Produced Hydrazine

My particular claim to fame with this chemical involves my attempts to make anhydrous hydrazine in one step using a catalytic process involving nickel powder and urea.  Too bad the process appears not to work, never the less I have invested a marked amount of time and effort in these attempts.

Castner Cell

The production of sodium from sodium hydroxide by electrolysis seems a simple matter at first and is easily accomplished on the small scale using simply a soup can and a loop of wire coupled with a battery charger and a heat source.  Too bad the small scale seems to be something I don't feel sufficient for my craving for this metal.
